Tamworth-trained speedster Border Rebel is still a chance to run in next week's Ramornie Handicap at Grafton but it is more likely he'll head to Sydney to make his weight-for-age debut in the Missile Stakes next month.

Border Rebel made it 12 wins from 16 starts when he claimed the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford on June 23.

It was after that victory trainer Sue Grills said she had three potential targets for the gelding - the Ramornie Handicap, the Missile Stakes in Sydney or the spring carnival in Melbourne.

Grills confirmed either the $130,000 Listed Ramornie (1200m) on July 14 or the Group Three Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 7 at Randwick will be Border Rebel's next mission.

Weights for the Ramornie will have a major bearing on where the four-year-old heads.

"He's pulled up really well from the Takeover Target Stakes and he'll be nominated for the Ramornie," Grills said.

"But probably the Missile Stakes will be his next start because I think he'll get too much weight in the Ramornie.

"That's the plan at this stage, and the horse is doing really well."

The trainer is confident that should Border Rebel head for the Missile Stakes in Sydney, he'll handle the step up to weight-for-age racing for the first time.

"He had 58.5 kilos at Gosford which is a lot of weight," Grills said.

"The trouble with handicaps is not so much what weight he has, but how much weight he is giving to other horses (below him)."

Apprentice Tim Bell, who has ridden Border Rebel in all but two of his races, had his appeal against a careless riding suspension in the Takeover Target Stakes dismissed last week.

That means if Grills decides the weight is right in the Ramornie she'll have to find another rider for Border Rebel at Grafton.

"Tim would miss the ride, so I'd have to have a think about (a replacement)," Grills said.

Bell's suspension ends on July 23, opening the way for him to ride Border Rebel if he was to be saved for the Missile Stakes.

Grills is also keen to test the sprinter in Melbourne in the spring but said no races had been selected.

"He hasn't had many starts this time in, he's only had four runs and they have been spaced," Grills said.
