Trainer David Kelly will chase next month's Ramornie Handicap in his former home town of Grafton following Kryptelon's win in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich.

Kryptelon capped off a great day for jockey Paul Hammersley with a commanding length win over Beyonce's Star in Saturday's 1350-metre feature.

Hammersley, who returned home to the Gold Coast from six months riding in Macau last August, won three races on the program including the Listed Eye Liner Stakes on Adnocon.

He started his winning day on the Bryan Guy-trained Fab Fevola in the Ipswich Dash Plate (1100m)

Kelly rode for many years in the Northern Rivers region of NSW before turning his hand to training and moving to Queensland several years ago.

Prior to his Gai Waterhouse Classic triumph, Kelly's biggest win was with Poetic Papal who beat Takeover Target in the Group Three Carlton Draught at Eagle Farm in 2005.

Kelly was confident of winning even before Kryptelon's task was made easier with the late scratching of favourite Jerezana who reared up in the barriers and was caught over a partition.

"She's been knocking at the door to win a big race," Kelly said.

"They normally run her off her legs when she resumes but I gave her two barrier trials to fit her for this race."

Kryptelon was having her first start since February and took her record to eight wins from 27 starts.

Kelly has tried and failed to win the Ramornie in the past but is confident of the five-year-old's chances in the 1200-metre Listed feature.

"She races best fresh so I'll give her a few weeks off now and go straight into the Ramornie," he said.

"I ran second in the Ramornie with Good Result a few years ago and hopefully this mare can go one better.

"I'm not worried going into the Ramornie first-up with her and I'll probably give her two barrier trials."

Hammersley plans to enjoy next week relaxing after incurring a recent careless riding suspension.

"I'm suspended after today so I'll have a good holiday," he said.
