Rookie trainer Eden Petrie is hoping more than two decades studying the methods of Ron Quinton and John Wallace will pay dividends and give him his first metropolitan win with talented sprinter Albert The Fat.
Petrie, 38, leases stables and has nine horses in work at Dale Sutton's Wadham Park at Canungra in the Gold Coast hinterland after being granted a trainer's licence late last month.
Petrie saddled his first metropolitan runner, Grab The Phone, at Doomben on November 1 but the eight-year-old didn't set the world on fire, finishing last of 13 in a 1200-metre Open sprint won by Bold Reason.
Albert The Fat was nominated for the $100,000 Keith Noud Quality (1200m) at Saturday's Eagle Farm meeting in which he received the minimum 53kg but will instead resume in the 1200-metre Class Six Handicap.
Apprentice Luke Rolls will utilise his three-kilogram claim on Albert The Fat who was allotted 58kg in the restricted class race.
"I've decided to go for the Class Six and use a claim on him," Petrie said.
"He's still eligible for two more Class Sixes so it would be nice to get two easy kills before he runs in the (Listed) Doomben Stakes next month.
"His owners were keen to run him in the George Moore Stakes but there's another Class Six Plate on that day which looks more suitable for him.
"After the Doomben Stakes his aim will be the Magic Millions Cup."
The Group Three George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on December 6 is the first leg of the Doomben summer series with the second leg, the Listed Doomben Stakes (1350m), on December 20.
The third leg, the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m), will be held on December 27 but Albert The Fat will be reserved for the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 10.
Petrie was foreman for Gold Coast trainer Wallace for 13 years before he left to join Quinton in Sydney where he stayed for six years.
He later returned to join forces again with Wallace where he was foreman for a further three years before leaving to work for Sutton at Wadham Park.
Sutton now resides and trains at Tylden in Victoria but has left several horses in Queensland under Petrie's care.
"I originally was licensed a few years ago but it was a struggle financially so when a position came up with Dale I quit to become his foreman in 2006," Petrie said.
"I learned a lot under John (Wallace) and Ron (Quinton) and I've been associated with some good horses like Spot The Rock, Swiftsynd, Allamanda Boy and Distancia."
Albert The Fat, a son of Magic Albert, has won five of his eight starts including a hat-trick of wins which culminated in his last victory over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm on June 21.
"He's matured a lot both physically and mentally and his two barrier trials this campaign have been good," Petrie said.
