Rod Quinn made the most of Corey Brown's misfortune to claim the Group Two Surround Stakes at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Quinn only got the call to ride the talented filly on Friday afternoon after Brown was stood down from the meeting when he was injured in an incident at the Randwick barrier trials earlier that morning.

"That's the way this game works," Quinn said.

"Someone's bad luck turns into someone else's good luck and you've just got to make the most of it."

The experienced jockey had the Peter Snowden-trained Parables three wide with cover in the 1400m fillies feature and made his move coming to the home turn.

Parables ($5.50) swept to the front on the outside and held off Red Tracer ($8) to win by a short neck with Oaks-bound filly Rose Of Peace ($61) flashing home late to finish 1-1/2 lengths away third.

Well-backed favourite More Strawberries ($1.40) settled in behind the leaders in the run but was outsprinted in the straight, finishing fourth.

Parables made full use of her home ground advantage, adding the Surround Stakes to her barnstorming victory in the Silver Shadow Stakes at the track last August.

Once he had picked up the ride, Quinn discussed the race with Snowden who had applied winkers in an attempt to have Parables closer in the run.

"Peter thought with the winkers on she could stay in touch a bit better and she did that," Quinn said.

"Coming to the 600-metre mark I had that much horse underneath me and I said, 'Well if she's good enough she'll win from here', and she has done the job."

Snowden was in Melbourne for the Australian Guineas where Bullbars finished second, but Sydney stable foreman Brad Widdup said it was a deserved win for Parables and for the "go-to-man" Quinn.

"She has been thereabouts and she's finally cracked it so we're very happy with that," Widdup said.

"We knew she was going to be caught wide but we weren't worried about that, she had good cover and Rodney has timed it right.

"He probably hit the front a bit quick but she has held on."

Red Tracer is knocking on the door of a feature win and stretched Parables at the finish after also being runner-up to Obsequious in the Light Fingers Stakes two weeks earlier.

Red Tracer will progress to the Keith Nolan Classic (1600m) at Kembla Grange on March 20, as will the Gary Portelli-trained Rose Of Peace.

More Strawberries settled in behind Who's Ready and Gai's Choice in running and Nash Rawiller was forced to pull the whip turning for home as Parables moved around her.

"She felt very dour, she's heading towards the Oaks and everyone has got to remember that," Rawiller said.

"She had her chance to wind up but she looked like a filly that was looking for more ground now."
