New Zealand filly Puttanesca is swapping rural Ruakaka for Hollywood and Glenn Boss is going along for the ride.

Puttanesca, fresh from running second in a restricted 1600m race at beachside Ruakaka north of Auckland, will run in the American Oaks at Hollywood Park and trainer Wayne Hillis has convinced Boss to do the steering.

When Puttanesca, boasting two wins from 10 starts, steps out in California on July 5, it won't be the first involvement in the race for her canny trainer.

Hillis took Boulevardofdreams to Los Angeles for the same grass track race in 2004. She finished seventh off the back of a third in the AJC Oaks at Randwick.

"This filly will be a lot better suited than the other one (Boulevardofdreams)," Hillis told NZPA.

"The race suits a mile-to-2000 metre horse with a turn of foot, rather than a grinding stayer. It's quite a turning track over there.

"She's definitely a good chance."

Hillis will be looking to better David Hayes' effort in preparing Anamato to run third in the 2000m race two years ago.

He will give Puttanesca a start in Wednesday's Restricted Bob Tait Memorial Cup over 1600m at Ruakaka in preparation for her Oaks bid.

Big-race rider Boss had no hesitation in accepting the Oaks challenge.

He said in Melbourne on Monday he would like a six or 12 month stint in the US and would arrive a few days early in a bid to secure other rides and make contacts.

"It is a good option to go there and do a bit of networking and see what comes of it," Boss said.

"If you were to get an offer from a decent stable you would probably jump at the chance.

"It is something I've always wanted to do and it looks exciting."

Boss described the Kiwi filly as a "live chance" at Hollywood Park.

Puttanesca won the Group Two Royal Stakes at Ellerslie over 2000m on New Years Day before finishing second in the Group Three Desert Gold Stakes and third in the 2000m 3yo Fillies Classic.

Her Hollywood Park run will be her last for Hillis.

Hong Kong-based Y K Wong bought her from New Zealand owner-breeders Scott and Katie Eagleton in March with a view to an American Oaks start and a subsequent career with a US trainer.
