Police have a good lead on the identity of a person seen jumping over the fence of trainer Mark Kavanagh's stables on Australia Day when 25 fillies and mares were let out of their boxes at Flemington.

During the Big Day Out concert, which was being held nearby at the racecourse, the horses were let loose to run around in the barn which was locked at the time.

One of them suffered a pelvis injury.

"An individual was observed jumping in at the back of Kavanagh's stables by someone who works at Flemington," Victoria Racing Club chief executive Dale Monteith said.

"A person matching that description was later escorted off the course by police, about half an hour after being seen at the stables, and that person's details were taken down.

"So we are expecting the police to follow up on that investigation."

Monteith would not confirm reports the person seen had allegedly been a staff member of the Kavanagh stable.

"It may or may not be. I can't comment on that," Monteith said.

"But you'd have to say that it was a malicious act and a person going to a music festival who did not know horses wouldn't go near a horse, let alone let horses out of their boxes and let them run around in the barn."

It is believed the pelvic injury suffered by one of the horses is not life-threatening.

Monteith said the VRC would meet with trainers to detail a proposed beefing-up of security arrangements for future concerts held at the racecourse.

"The club is confident that horses stabled at Flemington will be safe during the upcoming Good Vibrations and Future Music Festival events," Monteith said.

The Australian Jockey Club has also assured Randwick trainers that security will be adequate for the Future Music Festival being held at the premier Sydney track on March 6.
