Plain Magic booked a Brisbane winter carnival campaign after bringing glamour mare Chakvetadze's unbeaten run to a spectacular end at Eagle Farm.

Named after her ordinary looks, Plain Magic was ridden a copybook race by Jim Byrne and held on for a short half head win over Kryptelon in Saturday's XXXX Gold Nudgee Handicap (1200m).

Topweight Alverta, who lumped 60.5 kilos, disappointed her trainer Paul Messara despite finishing on well to fill the minor placing a further half neck away.

Chakvetadze, who was attempting to stretch her unbeaten run to eight, was loaded in the barriers with a blindfold before finishing sixth in the small field of seven, almost three lengths away.

Stewards later questioned Chakvetadze's trainer Michael Nolan and rider Larry Cassidy who both offered no excuses for the four-year-old mare's defeat.

"My instructions were to lead but I don't think she's a leader and she has had a mucked up preparation," Cassidy said.

"She gave me a good feel but I think she travelled too keenly in front."

Nolan said Chakvetadze, who was also burdened with a hefty 57.5 kilos, had every hope and was no match for Plain Magic who strolled past her in the straight.

"She had every hope and stopped quickly," Nolan said.

"There's no excuses but we won't give up and she'll come back here in a few weeks for another one of these fillies and mares races."

The loss will almost certainly call a halt to Nolan's hopes of sending Chakvetadze to Sydney for the rich fillies and mares races during the autumn.

While Chakvetadze's career suffered a setback, trainer Kelly Schweida was on cloud nine following Plain Magic's third consecutive victory.

The daughter of Magic Albert, who won her previous start on Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast on January 9, will now back up in a fortnight in a similar fillies and mares race over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm.

Schweida's long range plans with the four-year-old include the Group One Winter Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm in June, the race which gave him his only win so far at the elite level with Nova Star in 2007.

"That was a really gutsy effort," Schweida said.

"Jim (Byrne) rode her well. I'll run her in a fortnight in another one of these races then get her ready for the Silk Stocking.

"If she comes up after that we're hoping she'll measure up to the Winter Stakes."

The Listed Silk Stocking (1300m) is at the Gold Coast on May 8 with the Group One Winter Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 26.

Messara was disappointed with Alverta but will head back to Sydney with the daughter of Flying Spur for the Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in three weeks.

"I'm very disappointed with her run. She was a bit sluggish out of the gates and she laboured under her big weight," he said.

"The extra weight she got from the handicapper didn't help her but in another 50 metres she probably wins.

"I would have liked to see her a bit more explosive at the finish but the Breeders Stakes should suit her as it is set weights."
