Swooper Black Piranha is taking Con Karakatsanis on the greatest ride of his life and the fearless young trainer has warned punters not to write the horse off in Saturday's $2 million Doncaster at Randwick.

TAB Sportsbet has Black Piranha at $15 for the 1600-metre feature.

"He's great value," Karakatsanis said.

"I've chucked him in the deep end by putting him in at weight-for-age carrying equal weights with Group One winners and he really stepped up to the mark and showed he should be noticed."

Black Piranha comes into the race after rocketing home to get within a head of Vision And Power in the Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on a heavy track at Rosehill on April 4.

Prior to that he was an unlucky two lengths fourth to $5.50 Doncaster favourite All Silent in the Group Two Canterbury Stakes (1300m) in March.

That was the day Karakatsanis knew he had a Doncaster contender on his hands.

"There's been a big buzz in the stable since that race," Karakatsanis said.

"He got chopped out near the furlong (200m) and still hit the line well, it was a massive run."

Karakatsanis, a former jockey, has been training for just over two years and took over calling the shots with Black Piranha from his father Tony.

Shortly after taking over Karakatsanis promised Black Piranha's owners that he would win a Saturday race in town for them and in August at Rosehill he delivered on that promise.

The win gave Karakatsanis just his second metropolitan winner after Goldam scored at Rosehill a month earlier.

Five-year-old Black Piranha then enjoyed a successful campaign in Queensland in January when he won the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) before running a half-head second to Masai Pride in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) on the Gold Coast.

He followed that up with a narrow win in the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) eight days later.

At Tuesday's Doncaster barrier draw regular jockey Tye Angland pulled out gate 11, a barrier which Karakatsanis said was perfect.

"He'll ride him quiet early and then it depends on the speed of the race and the track if he goes to the inside or out wider," Karakatsanis said.

The Randwick surface was pelted with 68mm of rain on Monday and remains heavy but with fine weather forecast it is expected to improve.

None of this bothers Karakatsanis.

"The weather and track conditions don't concern me," he said.

"It doesn't matter with him but heavy or slow takes the edge off some of those more fancied runners and it probably brings him into the race a little bit more if anything."

Black Piranha pleased Karakatsanis with his work on Tuesday morning and he says things could not be better with the horse.

"He's pulled up looking sensational and will be spot-on Doncaster day, this is the day we've been waiting for," Karakatsanis said.
