Everything is back in order for the clash between star sprinters Hay List and Black Caviar on Saturday with Glyn Schofield able to ride after having one meeting shaved from a suspension and the horse recovering from a cut leg.

Hay List threw a scare into the camp when he took fright and kicked out at a concrete water trough in his paddock, lacerating his shin which required five stitches.

He will undergo a final precautionary veterinary examination on Friday ahead of the Patinack Farm Classic down the straight 1200 metres at Flemington, the scene of his latest victory in the Group Two Gilgai Stakes.

"The horse is fine, in fact he's better than I am," trainer John McNair said.

"It has been a bit stressful and I've been away from home for two months so I'm keen to get to Saturday.

"The vets will look at Hay List again on Friday. A VRC vet has been looking after him and she has been great so everything is in order for Saturday."

McNair trains at Gosford on the NSW Central Coast and took over the preparation of Hay List when his West Australian owners, the Davenport family, decided to test him in the eastern states.

His five starts for McNair have resulted in four wins including the Group One Manikato Stakes taking his career record to 12 wins from 14 outings but the trainer admitted taking on Black Caviar would be tough.

"There's a bit less pressure because this time we are going in as the underdog against Black Caviar who was very impressive at Moonee Valley," he said.

"She put away the two best Sydney mares easily."

Unbeaten after seven starts, Black Caviar won the Schweppes Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on October 23 in devastating fashion by 5-1/2 lengths from Hot Danish with NSW Horse of the Year and Patinack Classic contender Melito fifth of the six runners.

Schofield rode Hay List at Geelong on Wednesday before attending an appeal against the severity of a suspension he incurred for careless riding in last Saturday's Salinger Stakes.

Victoria's Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board deducted one day from the ban, allowing Schofield to return on Saturday.

"It's good news that Glyn can ride and everything is working out," McNair said.

"We'll decide on future plans for Hay List after Saturday."

The options are the Perth summer carnival, the Hong Kong International Sprint in December, or a short spell aimed at getting him back for the Lightning in February and a possible tilt at Royal Ascot in June.

There were 17 nominations for the Patinack Classic including last year's winner All Silent and last Saturday's brilliant Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Star Witness.
