Jockey Shane Scriven warned boom filly Paprika would struggle to win next month's $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast despite her record-breaking victory in the Listed McDougall Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Scriven obeyed instructions to the letter to have the General Nediym filly ridden back in the field and although her winning margin of 1-1/4 lengths over the Gillian Heinrich-trained Moonlight Hussey was impressive, the jockey was not that enthusiastic.

"On that effort she can't win the Magic Millions," Scriven said.

"She went from being perfect last start to doing a bit of rubbish today.

"She travelled sweetly back in the field but on the turn all she wanted to do was hang out.

"I don't know if I should blame myself but she wanted to switch off once she got to the front."

Paprika, who clocked 57.50 seconds in Saturday's 1000-metre feature, lowered the previous race record set by Station Mistress in 1991 by 0.40s.

Trainer Liam Birchley has left room for further improvement from Paprika before the Magic Millions Classic on January 10 and will give her another start in the Listed Tommy Smith Slipper (1200m) at Doomben on December 27.

"We wanted to teach her to settle so we rode her back today and things worked out terrific," Birchley said.

"They can be a bit one-dimensional if they lead in races all the time.

"It was a soft win and she'll improve but she shifted her front plate."

Meanwhile, Gold Coast colt Double Heart confirmed his place in the Magic Millions Classic following his nail-biting victory in the Listed Meynink Stakes (1000m).

Double Heart, who was bred by Sydney fishmonger Con Hadjiparaskevas, showed blistering pace to lead and had enough in hand at the finish to hold off the fast-finishing Fast Lover by a half-neck.

Trainer Helen Page, who is looking for her first Magic Millions victory, will delay a decision on whether to give the son of Lion Heart another start.

"He had to work hard to lead and he'll be better off when he gets to 1200 metres," Page said.

"I'm not sure if he needs another run before the big race and I'll wait and see how he pulls up."

While the honours were with Double Heart who made it two wins from three starts, trainer Maryann Thexton has her fingers crossed Fast Lover has enough prizemoney to secure a Magic Millions Classic berth.

Jockey Scott Seamer estimated Fast Lover, who has now earned $27,000 in prizemoney from two placings in four starts, conceded Double Heart a conservative eight lengths on the home turn.

"He was going that fast at the finish I wasn't sure if he had won or not," Seamer said.

"The Magic Millions is run at breakneck speed which will suit him and 1200 metres is what he wants but he's still got some maturing to do."
