Trainer Peter Snowden has given rival Melbourne filly Ortensia a big tick of approval as a future star but remains hopeful his stud-bound mare Forensics will have her measure in the Group One Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Forensics, a three-time Group One winner including the 2007 Golden Slipper, has been marking time in Brisbane due wet tracks and hasn't raced since she failed on a slow track in the Group One All-Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Anzac Day.

Snowden sent her to Queensland with this month's Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm in mind but a heavy track forced the Sydney trainer to scrap the $1 million mission.

Snowden is in the same position as Ortensia's trainer Tony Noonan by warning Forensics won't run in Saturday's 1400-metre feature if Eagle Farm is too wet.

However, forecasts for rain this week are yet to eventuate and Eagle Farm was still rated good on Friday.

"We're in the lap of the gods as far as the weather is concerned but hopefully she'll get to the track tomorrow," Snowden said.

"She's only lightly framed but she's a good trackworker.

"We've been lucky with her as she's had the use of the Gold Coast course proper whenever we've wanted to use it.

"I'm not worried about her having had the time away from racing as she has been kept up to the mark."

Snowden planned to give Forensics a barrier trial at either the Gold Coast or Gatton last week but the trials at her home base were washed out.

"We could have taken her to Gatton but I thought it was too far to go if the track was churned up," he said.

Snowden is unconcerned with Forensics drawing barrier 10 and expects her to race midfield.

"It's a perfect gate for her and she should be able to race midfield," he said.

"Most of the chances have drawn on her outside."

Snowden has great respect for Ortensia who is coming off her third to Black Piranha in the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 6.

The filly's previous Queensland runs resulted in wins in the Group Two QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm in May and the Listed Glenlogan Park Stud Stakes (1350m) at Doomben last month.

"Ortensia is a very high-class filly," Snowden said.

"She's a bit like Forensics and races better on top of the ground.

"I don't doubt she'll go on and prove to be high class later on."

Forensics, who has won seven of her 18 starts, will end her career with prizemoney totalling $3.84 million if she wins the Winter Stakes.
