Finding a race for promising filly Onethingatatime has been a challenge, and getting a start is another story altogether.

The Catcher In The Rye filly runs in The Riverview Hotel Hcp (1150m) at Randwick on Saturday, a long way from where trainer Bob Haire was expecting to see her return from an 11-week let-up.

Onethingatatime has not raced since running sixth to champion filly Samantha Miss in the Group Two Furious Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in September.

The three-year-old was supposed to run at her home track at Taree on the NSW mid-north coast on Sunday but was a late scratching after a barrier mishap.

Onethingatatime broke through her stall and galloped a lap of the course riderless and stewards were forced to rule her out.

Haire then picked out a 900-metre race at Newcastle on Saturday but that didn't go to plan either.

"They couldn't get enough runners and scrapped the race, so we put in a late nomination for Randwick and that's where she's going."

Adding to Haire's frustrations is the fact that a combination of wet weather and track renovations at Taree have prevented him from giving Onethingatatime some much needed hitouts.

"They started work here after Melbourne Cup day and the training tracks have been a bit boggy, so it's made it very hard," Haire said.

Onethingatatime has two wins and four placings from eight starts and has been through plenty in her brief career.

She was involved in a spectacular fall in the Silver Shadow Stakes in August when Sara's Choice fell into her path near the 200 metres.

The incident resulted in Tim Clark, the rider of Sara's Choice, suffering a fractured shoulder while Onethingatatime's regular jockey Dale Spriggs also suffered a shoulder injury.

Amazingly, Onethingatatime was back racing a couple of weeks later.

"It was important to get her back quickly to see if the fall had rattled her confidence," Haire said.

"It was a heavy track in the Furious and she never had a chance on that surface but she came through it well mentally."

Haire was planning to run the filly in the Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong on Sunday week but the Taree mishap put an end to those plans.

"I'm still not 100 per cent convinced that she's right in the body, she looks good and sound and hopefully she will convince me she is back on Saturday," Haire said.

With Spriggs riding at Newcastle on Saturday, the ride has gone to Glyn Schofield.

Haire said Onethingatatime would only have a couple of runs this time in and then be saved for an autumn campaign.

"If she shows us she warrants taking on some nice races then that's what we'll do but we'll get this one out of the way first, it's probably a bit short for her but she needs to start somewhere," he said.
