An old school stayer's preparation, starting with a campaign pipe-opener at Rosehill on Saturday, will be central to Sydney Cup plans for Scottish Border.
Ignoring the trend of Australian trainers gravitating towards the European way of keeping lead-up runs to a minimum, Garry Frazer has mapped out a busy summer-autumn schedule for the lightly-raced galloper.
"I've worked it out that he'll have six to seven runs before the Chairman's (Handicap) and then hopefully it will be on to the Sydney Cup," he said.
"His biggest asset is that he is a great-winded horse so having that many runs won't worry him."
Scottish Border literally has the runs on the board when it comes to longevity in a campaign.
In a winter preparation last year, the four-year-old won twice in nine starts and was still going strong at the end when he confirmed his promise with a Newcastle Cup placing to Stratofortress.
"I thought his run in the Newcastle Cup was easily the best run in the race," Frazer said.
"It was a biased track and he was the only horse all day to make ground.
"The horses which fought it out were on the speed and they were advantaged."
Scottish Border resumes with 57.5kg in Saturday's Myer Handicap (1300m) and Tim Clark, who linked successfully with the stayer last term, has the ride again.
He is yet to win in two first-up starts but has firmed from $17 to $11 in TAB Sportsbet markets.
Frazer says the early support isn't misplaced.
"His first-up run last time was really good. I wouldn't be surprised if he did something," Frazer said.
"I think he's come back a lot stronger and more mature.
"He's only had a few runs but on what he has done so far he's potentially a very good stayer."
The Chris Waller-trained Sikka, a beaten favourite in two starts since a first-up Randwick win in November, heads early betting at $3.20 ahead of Fitness Fanatic ($4.80) and Outstandingly ($5).
