Old Jock will be out to atone for an unlucky last-start effort in Wednesday's Mornington Cup.

Trainer Mick Price has some reservations about the Montjeu four-year-old who finished eighth, beaten nine lengths, to Bolle after striking interference near the 200m and nearly falling in the Selangor Turf Club Hcp (2000m) at Caulfield on February 6.

"He's on the way up having had four runs in this preparation, but he didn't get a lot of benefit out of his latest run," Price said.

"He nearly came down but the horse is fine. It's only one-and-a-half weeks between runs, I haven't been too kind on him but I'd say the horse is still on the way up for that hard 2400-metre fitness."

Craig Newitt replaces apprentice Jason Maskiell on Old Jock in the Listed $200,000 2400m event in which the gelding has drawn barrier 10 in the 13 horse-field.

"He's drawn out a bit, he'll be finishing it off but I thought I'd use this run as he'll have a good solid hitout going into a 2500-metre race (the $100,000 Moonee Valley Night Cup) at Moonee Valley on Friday week," Price said.

"Regardless of where he runs he's certainly going to get a lot of benefit from it.

"He's a nice horse and I think he'll run pretty well."

Price had nominated Old Jock for the Group Three $300,000 Launceston Cup (2400m) on Wednesday week but ruled that option out.

Old Jock, a winner at 1400m and 1600m in New Zealand, is yet to win for Price since he was sent to him but he has shown promise, being placed in three of his eight Australian outings.

His first start for Price was when third to Harris Tweed in the Group Two Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on April 4 last year.

A week later he finished seventh to Roman Emperor in the AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick.

"He was immature at that point. He's a better horse this time in, he has matured somewhat," Price said.

"I just didn't think he ran out the 2400 metres at that stage on the day."

The honest Tony Vasil-trained stayer Apprehend, winner of three of his last four starts, is $3.40 favourite with TAB Sportsbet, just shading the Peter Moody-prepared Fairygem, who won the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Randwick last start, at $3.60.

Old Jock and last year's runner-up Capecover are at $6.50 and The Tiger is $12 with Blackfriars Bridge next best at $14.
