Danny Nikolic says he has found his Caulfield Guineas mount in the promising Amah Rock who won the Listed Mitchell McKenzie Stakes at just his second start.

A narrow winner of an Echuca maiden on his debut on August 1, Amah Rock came off the leader Secret Hills' back to take out the 1200m feature.

Backed from $9 to $6.50, the Fastnet Rock gelding scored by a half-length from Hot Spin ($10) with Secret Hills, backed from $5.50 to start $4.60 favourite, 1-1/4 lengths away third.

"He's the type of horse who might even be able to win a Caulfield Guineas," Nikolic said of the Peter Morgan trained three-year-old.

"It's only his second start and doing his preliminary, going around to the barriers, he was just not switched on. He's got no idea what he's doing.

"He travelled like a winner, he's got plenty to offer this horse."

Nikolic won the 2009 Caulfield Guineas aboard Starspangledbanner and said Amah Rock was a lot different horse to that colt who went on to win the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield and the Golden Jubilee Stakes and July Cup in the UK.

"He (Starspangledbanner) knew what he was doing," the jockey said.

"The Caulfield Guineas is still a fair way off but he (Amah Rock) travelled like a winner with that good cruising speed where he can just idle, and they're good-class horses.

"He's not going to meet much better than that and he's only going to get better once he gets to 1400 metres or a mile (1600m).

"He's got a great temperament and he'll be my Caulfield Guineas ride. He's a ripper."

Morgan was at Morphettville where stablemate Dusty Star was the unplaced favourite to Alcopop in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m), and assistant trainer Craig Widdison stood in for him.

"He's always shown us a lot. He's a casual sort of a horse but we've got a fair opinion of him and he took the next step well," Widdison said.

"He galloped with Dusty Star here on Tuesday morning and showed us he's going very well.

"The way the track's playing he had all the favours and we wanted to use the barrier (one) and Danny wanted to do that too and the breaks went his way.

"He's in the Guineas so we'll keep heading towards it and see how far we get."
