Three-year-old Niagara burst into Doncaster Mile calculations at Rosehill on Saturday with an explosive performance to win the Group Two Ajax Stakes.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse has won six Doncasters and said she would let the dust settle before deciding whether Niagara heads towards the $2 million feature at Randwick on April 21.

The promising colt couldn't have been much more impressive in the Ajax, shooting to the front early in the race before leaving his rivals in his wake as he let down 350 metres from home.

Star Of Octagonal ($8.50) led in the chasing pack 3-1/2-lengths behind Niagara ($6) with Alma's Fury ($19) another head away third.

Niagara had always shown plenty of talent but has gone to a new level in his two runs so far this preparation after an eye-catching first-up second to stablemate Nobby Snip at Randwick two weeks ago.

"He is a special colt and has always shown ability," Waterhouse said.

"He was just too strong for them today.

"He went to the Sandown Guineas in the spring and was beaten a nostril but was still not furnished.

"He's a particularly furnished colt now and whatever he runs in he'll be hard to beat.

"Will he run in the Doncaster? I'll sleep on it tonight and see how he pulls up. I'll make a decision in the next week."

Jockey Tommy Berry got the call up to ride the colt in the Ajax and would love to keep the ride should the colt continue on to the Doncaster.

Niagara is weighted on the limit of 52kg in the Doncaster but is eligible for a penalty for winning the Ajax.

"He was outstanding today," Berry said.

"I think the penny is just starting to drop with him because he really let down today.

"He didn't want to hang in or out, he just went straight. With a light weight in the Doncaster he's got to be a pretty good chance."
