A first-up win two preparations ago accidentally found the key to consistent sprinter Ego's Dare who will chase another victory at Randwick on Saturday.

The gelding is targeting a third straight first-up win in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1100m).

The Gerald Ryan-trained sprinter won the Listed Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) first-up in April while his other success at Sydney's racing headquarters came in September last year when a new racing pattern was born for the former frontrunner.

"He drew wide in a race first-up at Randwick around this time last year and I said to Hugh Bowman who was riding him, `Just go out and ride him how he begins'," Ryan said.

"Horses all kicked up inside him so he went back and then hit the line a hundred miles an hour to win."

The six-year-old has been ridden off the speed in all of his starts since and with the prospect of plenty of speed in Saturday's race, Ryan believes the gelding is on target to turn in another big run.

"The faster they go the better it is for him," Ryan said.

"He's come back well, he's been working well, and he looks well.

"I just don't want any rain."

Ego's Dare - winner of three from four first-up - is second favourite for the Lightning behind the Rick Worthington-trained Whitefriars who tested Hot Danish in the Group Two Shorts (1200m) last start.

Ryan also has a chance in Saturday's Listed Governor Macquarie Cup with Hinchinbrook returning to the races after a freshen-up.

Hinchinbrook came through a crucial barrier trial in good order last Friday and needs to run a big race if he's to continue on to Melbourne for the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes two weeks later.

"He trialled well the other day and I'm happy where he is," Ryan said.

Hinchinbrook, winner of the Canonbury Stakes and Skyline Stakes at the track last season, is rated a $5.50 chance in the seven-horse field with the Robert Heathcote-trained Buffering favourite at $1.80 ahead of Obsequious at $4.80.

"It's a nice race for him (Hinchinbrook) but Robert Heathcote's horse has done nothing wrong and should get a nice run in front," Ryan said.

"We're going to ride Hinchinbrook quiet and see how we go."

Ryan's two-year-old filly Saramenha will make her debut in the City Tattersalls Plate (1000m) after finishing second in a 900m trial at Rosehill on Tuesday.

"If the three of them go and run up to the way they look, then all three should go and run well," the trainer said.
