Heavyweight apprentice Kody Nestor landed a winner at his first ride for premier trainer Gai Waterhouse when Lorne Dancer proved too classy for his opposition at Randwick.

The three kilogram-claiming 19-year-old from Dubbo was transferred to trainer Guy Walter's Warwick Farm stable two months ago and was delighted to ride for Waterhouse.

"I'm an aggressive rider and Mrs Waterhouse's horses suit my style, and they are so fit it doesn't matter what sort of weight they carry," Nestor said.

Group winner Lorne Dancer carried 58.5kg and began slowly before Nestor gave the five-year-old a dig and soon after the strapping Danehill Dancer gelding was setting the tempo in front.

Rounding the turn Lorne Dancer, who was drifter in betting from $2.60 to $3.20, accelerated nicely and while he did get tired at the 100 metres he still held off Vintedge ($6) by a length.

The disappointment of the race was $2.50 favourite Informality who was fourth.

Lorne Dancer was having just his second run back after spending more than a year on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Last start Lorne Dancer lumped a massive 64kg when second to Mr Unforgettable at Randwick on Boxing Day.

Waterhouse's racing manager Robyn Hartney was pleased with both horse and rider.

"I suggested Kody because the horse wouldn't be carrying much dead weight and of course because he's a very good, strong rider," Hartney said.

"That was a great training effort. He had a long time out with a slab fracture which is a piece of bone that comes away from the knee, and he's had a really good, long, slow preparation."

Randwick has been a happy hunting ground for Nestor who booted Wasted Emotions home there in November in what was the quality sprinter's last race before he died in a training accident while being prepared for a recent Group One race in New Zealand.
