Kevin Moses is renowned as a fierce competitor but winning will not be everything for the former jockey turned Group One winning trainer at Rosehill on Saturday.

Moses saddles up Sydney Cup winner No Wine No Song in the Group Two Apollo Stakes (1400m) in what he says will be an emotional day for the stable.

The seven-year-old was being aimed at last year's Melbourne Cup but in August was found to be gravely ill and underwent emergency surgery to repair a displaced bowel.

No Wine No Song has not raced since giving Moses his first Group One success in last year's Sydney Cup in May.

"He's always been a stable pet and when he nearly died it rocked the stable," Moses said.

"If he did win on Saturday that would be amazing because I don't expect him to, but this isn't about winning, we just want to see him back enjoying himself.

"It's going to be a big day for the stable, just to see him back at the races, he's come such a long way and there's been a lot of hard work just to get him to this point."

Stable apprentice Jamie Quinnell has the ride on No Wine No Song with Moses hoping to secure the gelding's Sydney Cup winning rider Damien Oliver later in the campaign.

"Jamie knows the horse well and I'm not sure if Damien will be back and if I put another jockey on they might want to stay on him," Moses said.

"So we'll keep it open for Damien for the time being."

Quinnell, who joined Moses late last year, will ride in an apprentices race at Moonee Valley on Friday night over the 2040 metre Cox Plate course.

Moses, who won three Sydney premierships as a jockey, said No Wine No Song would follow a similar Sydney Cup path to last year.

On his way to the major win he ran second in the Listed Manion Cup (2400m) before winning the Group Two Chairman's Handicap (2600m).

The Sydney Cup will be run on Anzac Day at Randwick.

The Peter Snowden-trained Desuetude is the TAB Sportsbet $2.30 favourite ahead of multiple Group One winner Tuesday Joy at $6.50.

George Main Stakes winner (1600m) Mentality is on the third line of betting at $7 ahead of stakeswinners Gallant Tess and Raheeb who are locked on $8.

No Wine No Song is rated a $126 chance.
