Morgan Dollar's poor record on his home track of Morphettville has led to the short-course sprinter returning to Melbourne where he has done most of his racing.

Because of a lack of options for him in South Australia, Morgan Dollar has had only seven starts in his home state for two wins at the now defunct Cheltenham.

"The main reason we've come over again is because he goes disgracefully at Morphettville," trainer Stuart Gower said.

"He's had four runs at Morphettville and he hasn't run a place.

"With no Cheltenham and Victoria Park any more he's got to go somewhere and he'd carry the grandstand if he went to Gawler or Murray Bridge.

"He thrives on the float trips to and from Melbourne and he's spent more time racing there anyway."

The Planchet six-year-old has had 19 starts in Melbourne, winning at Moonee Valley as a two-year-old and at Caulfield as a three-year-old and last year was a close fourth to Swiss Ace in the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.

It is just over two years since his last win which was in the Listed Dermody Stakes (1000m) at Cheltenham.

Some of his best races have been at the Valley including running second the past two years in the Group Three McEwen Stakes (1000m) - in 2008 to Kaphero and in 2009 to Nicconi.

Last year he ran third to Secret Flyer in the equivalent to Saturday's $100,000 RDC Australasian Flooring Plate (1000m).

"He seems to love that bit of give in the track and a bit of rain is going to help him too," Gower said.

"He excels when it is a bit soft."

The Moonee Valley track was rated a slow (7) on Thursday.

The gelding will be ridden for the first time by Craig Newitt.

"He's going well and he'd want to go close to winning on Saturday to have another crack at the McEwen in three weeks," Gower said.

"He races best when he's mad fresh and he's had a good spell. It's just that he hasn't won for a long time.

"He won a jumpout by at least 10 lengths but you don't know how good the opposition was behind him."
