Glamour filly More Joyous had to pick herself up off the canvas to win the Surround Stakes at Warwick Farm on Saturday and keep alive Gai Waterhouse's prediction she would go through the autumn carnival unbeaten.

More Joyous, sent out the $1.22 favourite, was made to really fight over the concluding stages when Hurtle Myrtle launched a serious challenge and raced to the front inside the final 200m.

Jockey Nash Rawiller had his own way in the lead on More Joyous in transit until Glyn Schofield came around the field on the Matthew Smith-trained Hurtle Myrtle ($9.50) and raced up to join More Joyous shortly after straightening.

But the Group One-winning filly responded late when she needed to and fought back to defeat Hurtle Myrtle by a half-neck with the pair clearing out from third placegetter So Anyway ($81), who finished a further 2-3/4 lengths away.

"I was rapt to see her do that today," Rawiller said.

"She really had a fight on her hands 150 metres out. Full credit to Hurtle Myrtle but she (More Joyous) really lifted herself up off the canvas. That's what you like to see good horses, champions do."

Rawiller admitted he thought More Joyous was in strife inside the final 200m but said he was thrilled she was able to fight to the line and still find a way to win.

Schofield said it was testament to Hurtle Myrtle's character and ability that she was able to push More Joyous right to the post.

"Nash was having a picnic in front and I think he was still eating his sandwiches when I came up," he said.

"He had to spit out his sandwich and put down his drink and it was a testament to Hurtle Myrtle's character.

"She gave her all and it took a filly like More Joyous to really dig deep to get the better of her."

Smith also believed Hurtle Myrtle would earn plenty of respect from her performance against such a dominant favourite.

"I thought we had her cold," Smith said.

"My filly had the harder run and I'm very proud of her. She's still got a lot of improvement in her and everyone will have more respect for her next time."

The Warwick Farm-based trainer doesn't think Hurtle Myrtle will get a start in the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) so will look to either the Phar Lap Stakes or Keith Nolan Classic for her next run on the way to the Group One Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) on April 3.

More Joyous' owner John Singleton and Waterhouse are aiming More Joyous at the Group One Doncaster Mile (1600m) and have booked Glen Boss to ride the filly as her 49.5kg impost is too light for Rawiller.

More Joyous raced in new black, pink and blue colours in the Surround raising awareness for the Gut Foundation, a charity for research into bowel cancer which Singleton is supporting.
