A bigger and stronger More Joyous stepped out between races at Rosehill on Saturday as she and her rider Nash Rawiller stepped up preparations for their returns.

Rawiller has been sidelined for the first part of the carnival through suspension but has still made an appearance at each of the past three Saturday meetings in Sydney to put some of Gai Waterhouse's spring hopefuls through their paces in exhibition gallops.

He was there again on Saturday to give More Joyous a solo workout over 1000m, with the mare clocking 60.56sec for the hitout with a last 600m in 34.4sec.

Rawiller kept the reigning NSW Horse of the Year well off the fence during the gallop and was "rapt" with the five-time Group One winner's work.

Waterhouse said More Joyous would head to Melbourne on the Sunday before the Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 30 for her first start since her Doncaster failure in April.

"She was a little bit lazy down the back but she really switched on and pleased me up the straight," Rawiller said.

"She ran right through the line for about a furlong past the post."

Waterhouse said it was important for Rawiller to maintain his fitness and keep his weight down as he has important rides for the stable coming up once he returns later this week.

"Plus his feedback is invaluable," Waterhouse said.

"She (More Joyous) has come back super and is so relaxed. Nothing is a problem for her and she has put on a lot of weight," the trainer added.

Caulfield Cup winner Descarado also went around in an exhibition gallop with stablemate Charing Cross over 1200m.

Descarado had a setback a few weeks ago delaying his spring return.

Waterhouse said Descarado would resume in the Group Two Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on September 24.

The stayer will then run over 2000m in Melbourne at his next start.

"If I'm happy with him after that he'll run in the Cox Plate," Waterhouse said.

The Manikato will also feature the first assignment against older horses for Golden Slipper winner Sepoy who has scored two comfortable wins in Melbourne so far this campaign.
