A lack of suitable staying races at home has prompted trainer Peter Moody to send Victorian stayer Singing Sovereign north for the Queensland Cup at Eagle Farm.

The Queensland Cup on Saturday is the only race over 3200 metres on the Brisbane racing calender and is one of the few genuine staying races now held around the country.

The four-year-old was due to leave Moody's Caulfield stables on Sunday and was expected to arrive by float late Monday night.

A son of Viking Ruler, Singing Sovereign finished only ninth on a heavy track last start behind Inkster in a 2400-metre Open on Sandown's Hillside course on June 13.

He was runner-up to Spare A Dime over the same distance at the track 10 days earlier.

Moody believes Singing Sovereign is adaptable to all conditions and holds no fears if Eagle Farm is rain affected.

"He's a dour stayer and can handle all conditions," Moody said.

"I've sent him up there because there's not many two mile (3200m) races left in Australia.

"He's not up to the big spring races but he's getting better and there's not a lot of opportunities left for him.

"He's had one run over 3000 metres when he was successful in a race at the Hillside track last year."

Singing Sovereign was ridden by stable jockey Luke Nolen when he raced in a forward position to win the 3000-metre event on November 26.

Until Reggie's Caloundra Cup win on Saturday, Moody's winter carnival had been relatively quiet in comparison to 2008 when he claimed the Queensland Derby-Oaks double with Riva San.

Riva San returned to Queensland for this year's winter carnival but failed to reproduce her three-year-old form.

She failed in all four Brisbane appearances including her latest run in the Group Three Premier's Cup (2200m) at Doomben in May, won by her stablemate, Reggie.

Jim Byrne, who won last year's Queensland Derby on Riva San and was aboard Reggie at Caloundra, has been booked to partner Singing Sovereign in the Queensland Cup.

Moody has no plans to extend Singing Sovereign's campaign in Queensland after his hit and run mission.

"He's only up there for the Queensland Cup and then he'll spell to prepare for some of the longer races back home in the summer," Moody said.
