Peter Moody is considering a key change in tactics for Typhoon Tracy in Saturday's Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Typhoon Tracy has been ridden either in front or on the pace in each of her seven career starts.

The mare was beaten a nose by Vigor in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last start after racing outside Maco'reilly with 200-1 outsider He's Something taking that pair on three-wide.

While the other two horses dropped off in the straight, Typhoon Tracy fought on gallantly to miss by the narrowest of margins.

"We are considering it. It all depends on the pace of course," Moody said of the possibility of riding Typhoon Tracy further back in the Underwood.

"We don't want to drag her back to last if they are going to walk up front where we could have been."

Typhoon Tracy has drawn barrier 16 in the Group One weight-for-age feature and if the three emergencies - Maco'reilly (18), Zagreb (19) and Miss Darcey (17) - don't get a start she will jump from the outside gate in the 16-horse field.

"We don't have to lead. That's not an issue with us, but you just have to worry about what's happening around her too," Moody said.

"Last time we always thought Maco'reilly was going to lead but we didn't expect the 3000-1 shot from Pakenham (He's Something) to `diggerise' us sitting outside us three-deep.

"If we don't think the pace is there we could lead by six (lengths).

"The distance is no worries. She's a very relaxed horse and from the barrier, if we don't think there is a lot of pace there, she can overcome it."

Typhoon Tracy jumped from the outside gate (16) when she won the Group Three Schweppes Trophy (1400m) at Flemington and from 14 of 16 to win the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill, both last March.

Moody said Caulfield Cup favourite Vigor got the softest run in the Makybe Diva sitting behind He's Something and easing out from behind that horse's heels to make his winning run.

Vigor has drawn barrier five for Saturday with Whobegotyou to jump from 10 and Predatory Pricer two.

Typhoon Tracy finished third behind Cox Plate contenders Predatory Pricer and Whobegotyou in the Liston Stakes (1400m) when the trio resumed last month.

Moody said the mare had to live right up to her last couple of runs to stay on track for the Cox Plate.

"We can come back to $500,000 mares races but Whobegotyou and Predatory Pricer can't," Moody said.

"We've got a lot of options. We can come back to an Epsom, a Toorak, the Myer Classic or mares set weights Group Two races worth $300,000 and she'd start 1-3 in those.

"If she couldn't handle Cats Whisker I'd give up."
