Peter Moody is enthusiastic about the prospects of Railway Stakes placegetter Annenkov in the Kingston Town Classic at Ascot despite his wide draw.
Moody said the 1800m of Saturday's weight-for-age feature would suit the seven-year-old Danehill entire better than the 1600m of the Railway in which he finished a close third to Gilded Venom and Sniper's Bullet.
"His form is first rate and his work since the Railway has been very good," the Caulfield trainer said.
"He's drawn a little awkwardly (barrier 15 of 16) but I think I'd probably rather him out there than in one as he can work his way across the field at his own tempo, whereas if he'd drawn in he (jockey Luke Nolen) would have had to ride the ears off him to hold his spot because he's not the best out of the gates.
"I'm very pleased with the horse. I know it's weight-for-age and he's up a lot in weight but he's performed well at weight-for-age and I think he's in the race up to his ears."
Moody reported that his other Perth visitor Pillar Of Hercules, who ran third to Famous Roman and Gilded Venom in the RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) at Ascot, suffered a knee chip when finishing 14th in the Railway and would be sidelined for six months.
Meanwhile, Gilded Venom will attempt to become just the fifth horse to complete the Railway Stakes-Kingston Town Classic double in the $500,000 event.
The five-year-old will attempt to emulate Better Loosen Up (1989), Island Morn (1994), Old Comrade (2001) and Modem (2004) by winning both Group One features in the same season.
Up until 2005 the Kingston Town was run before the Railway.
The Steve Wallace-trained gelding, who is Melbourne autumn carnival-bound, steps up to his first weight-for-age test following his Railway triumph on November 22 and like Annenkov goes up 7kg to 59kg on Saturday.
The Kingston Town Classic has been won by some of the Australian turf's all-time great gallopers including Kingston Town himself in 1982, Family of Man (1976 and 1978), Vo Rogue (1988) and Better Loosen Up.
Raced by Wallace with the Wholagan family, stable clients for nearly 30 years, Gilded Venom, a $20,000 yearling, is the first Group One winner by his sire Golden Snake.
Golden Snake, a four-time Group One-winning son of Danzig, stands at Bombora Downs, Bittern, on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.
A half-brother to 2007 Group One Caulfield Guineas runner-up and Group Three McNeil Stakes winner Scenic Blast, Gilded Venom has had seven wins and seven placings from 18 starts for just under $880,000 in prizemoney.
After the Kingston Town he is scheduled to run in the Group Two CB Cox Stakes (2100m) at Ascot on December 17.
Marasco, Niconero and Sniper's Bullet share favouritism at $5.50 with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Gilded Venom at $6.50, three-year-old Grand Nirvana at $8, Annenkov at $13 with El Daana next best at $17.
