Monton appears set to miss out on a Doomben 10,000 start but trainer Tim Martin has not given up hope of getting the three-year-old into next month's Stradbroke Handicap.

The Hobartville Stakes winner is 26th in the order of entry for the Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on Saturday and long odds to get into the field.

But Martin still has his sights on Group One riches for Monton this winter and is hoping the gelding can force his way into the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 12.

"He will definitely run in the 10,000 if he gets in, but I don't think he will," Martin said.

"He will either run Saturday in the 1200 metre three-year-old race or I'll wait for the QTC Cup the following week.

"The winner of that is exempt from a (Stradbroke) ballot so if he won that he'd go to the Stradbroke and if he didn't then he could go to the (Queensland) Guineas."

Monton, with Tye Angland in the saddle, failed to beat a runner home in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) won by Albert The Fat after racing on a hectic speed.

That was his first run since he finished sixth to Shoot Out in the Randwick Guineas in March and Martin pointed out Monton was only beaten 4-1/4 lengths.

"You obviously walk away disappointed but there were excuses," Martin said.

"Tye was a bit too positive on him and the horse was first-up from a spell. He just tired late and Tye didn't knock him around.

"Ridden a bit quieter I'm sure he will go a lot better."

Chris Munce will ride Monton if he starts on Saturday while Angland will be aboard stablemate Scouting Wide if he backs up in the Group Three Premier's Cup (2200m).

Scouting Wide scored a tenacious win in Saturday's McKell Cup (2400m) at Rosehill, booking his passage to Queensland where the Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 12 will be his aim.

"I will float him to Brisbane on Wednesday night and if he's OK and I'm happy with him he is a chance to run on Saturday, or go around in the O'Shea Stakes (Eagle Farm Cup) a week later," Martin said.

"He needs another run before the Brisbane Cup."

Martin has also entered Queensland Derby hopeful Blueys Way in Saturday's Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) but is lukewarm on running him.

The lightly-raced gelding was a sound fourth to The Hombre at his first test at stakes level in the Rough Habit Plate on May 15.

"I'd say he will go straight to the Derby but I'll decide after I watch him work tomorrow (Tuesday) morning," Martin said.
