Juvenile Triple Crown will be on trial for a shot at the Magic Millions Classic when she takes on highly rated filly Ambers Waltz at Randwick.

The filly has been competitive at her two starts to date finishing fourth to Gybe in the Gimcrack Stakes on debut and third to Brightexpectations in the Wyong Slipper earlier this month.

However, trainer Gary Portelli said she needed to win the TAB Number 1 Club Hcp (1200m) on Saturday to book her place in the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January.

"Realistically, she needs to win this race to warrant going to the Magic Millions," Portelli said.

"I'm a firm believer that if you don't take a horse up there who can win you can ruin them.

"You have got to go up there with the right horse, a horse that copes with high pressure racing, with the heat and with the travelling."

Triple Crown is a $21 chance in early Magic Millions betting while Ambers Waltz is the $3.80 favourite with TAB Sportsbet.

However, the John O'Shea-trained filly, an impressive debut winner, has to overcome the outside barrier in Saturday's 13-horse field while Triple Crown has drawn ideally in three.

"Ambers Waltz is pretty good, we all know that," Portelli said.

"But this might be our chance to beat her given the barrier draw."

Portelli is overdue for a change of luck.

He has found himself in the runner-up's stall all too frequently of late with O'Crikey, Dictatorial, Prince Of Hearts and Elusive Lad all running seconds in town in the past two weeks.

"I've had four seconds in town in the last couple of weeks and I had two again yesterday at Canterbury," Portelli said.

"If I get any more seconds I'll be up to a minute."

Portelli will also be represented at the Boxing Day meeting by O'Crikey in the International Passport Hcp (1400m) and Allervite in the Super Impose Hcp (1100m).
