Trainer Chris Waller hopes Metal Bender can carry him to even greater heights in the Cox Plate after the four-year-old gave him his fourth Group One win of the season in the Doomben Cup.

Metal Bender looked gone for all money at the top of the straight before Kerrin McEvoy drove him home to score by a head over the gutsy Gai Waterhouse-trained mare Gold Water in Saturday's 2020-metre feature.

Metal Bender's stablemate Triple Honour finished just a short half-head away third.

The Doomben Cup victory capped a remarkable day for the Sydney trainer who earlier won the Group Two Champagne Classic with Pressday and prepared Stryker to win the Group Three Fred Best Classic.

Metal Bender's win was a triumph for former international jockey Kerrin McEvoy who hadn't won a major Queensland race since Juanmo's Group One victory in the TJ Smith Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm in 2001.

McEvoy only picked up the ride after Metal Bender's Hollindale Stakes-winning rider Hugh Bowman was suspended.

"I went for Kerrin to replace Hugh as he won the (Group One) Manikato Stakes in Melbourne for me. I owed the ride to him," Waller said.

McEvoy paid tribute to Bowman who gave him some timely advice which ultimately helped Mental Bender to win.

"I spoke with Hugh yesterday and he pointed out a few things with Metal Bender," McEvoy said.

"He told me I had to have him stoked up well before the home turn and it's lucky I did.

"He was a top three chance on the turn and he kept grinding away."

Waller is likely to immediately spell Metal Bender who was coming off a last-start victory in the Group Two Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast.

However, he hinted the gelding's job in Queensland may not be over as the Group Two O'Shea Stakes (2400m) at Eagle Farm in two weeks might be an option.

Waller has only had Metal Bender in his stable for a short period after he was transferred from the Allan Denham stable.

"To win the Hollindale over 1800 metres so soon with him was a good effort and this was an even bigger thrill," Waller said.

"He looked in trouble before the home turn but I'm glad the Doomben straight is as long as it is.

"He needed every bit of it to win."

Trainer Anthony Cummings was disappointed to see Road To Rock end his career in defeat with a brave fourth.

"He ran a good race but things didn't work out for him," Cummings said.

"He's off to stud in New Zealand now. He had to work too hard going out of the straight the first time and didn't disgrace himself. It's quite sad to lose him."

Nash Rawiller rated Gold Water as one of Waterhouse's most consistent mares and said she was gallant in defeat.

"It was a super run. She had to do the donkey work and you can't ask for more," Rawiller said.
