Trainer Jason McLachlan has turned to Golden Slipper-winning jockey Brad Rawiller to end Phelan Ready's absence of more than two years from the winners' list in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap at Caloundra on Saturday.

Phelan Ready hasn't won since Rawiller was successful on the son of More Than Ready in the Group One Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in 2009 when the youngster was trained in partnership by McLachlan and his late father Bruce.

Bruce McLachlan, who died in June 2009, won 16 Brisbane trainers' premierships and a host of Group Ones around the country but never trained a Glasshouse Handicap winner.

"The Glasshouse was one of the few races Dad never won and it would be great to win it for him on my home track," McLachlan said.

Phelan Ready has had a number of minor injury issues since his Golden Slipper triumph but McLachlan is confident he finally has him at his best for the 1400-metre feature.

"He's injury-free this time which is different to his previous preparations," McLachlan said.

Phelan Ready indicated he was close to his top when resuming with a fast-finishing second to Varenna Miss in the Group Two QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on June 4.

McLachlan decided to bypass the feature Group One sprints, the Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap, this year in favour of the Glasshouse Handicap but will still give Phelan Ready his opportunity at the highest level during the spring.

"His first-up run was super. He was three and four wide and in another two strides he wins," McLachlan said.

"I also decided to bypass the Eye Liner and set him for this race.

"Unfortunately Shane Scriven, who rode him last start, is suspended so I rang Brad to see if he wanted to come up to ride him.

"I'm hoping Brad and the horse can click again.

"If he goes well I'm going to send him to Melbourne for the spring along with Absalon and possibly Facile Tigre."

McLachlan is unconcerned Phelan Ready won't have started for nearly a month in the Glasshouse Handicap.

"He hasn't raced for a nearly month but I've given him a soft trial since then," he said.

McLachlan was disappointed when Phelan Ready drew barrier 17 but following 21 millimetres of rain this week it could now prove a blessing on a track rated a slow (6).

"I'd prefer him on a dry track but he has won on a slow track," he said.

"I can't see the track improving much but I don't want it heavy."
