Former New Zealand stayer Maythehorsebemagic showed he would be a force in next month's Warrnambool Cup after landing a betting plunge at his Australian debut at Caulfield.

The seven-year-old joined Mike Moroney's Flemington stable only three weeks ago and was backed from $13 to $9 before racing away with Monday's JRA handicap (2406m).

However Moroney's racing manager Anthony Feroce was unsure of the source of support for Maythehorsebemagic especially on the firm track which was upgraded to a good two before the start of the meeting.

Maythehorsebemagic prefers "easy" ground and a misunderstanding with stewards prevented him from racing in concussion plates for the first time.

"He prefers dead to slow ground so when it was a good two it didn't look suitable," Feroce said.

Despite the hard track Maythehorsebemagic was dominant, sustaining a strong run from near last to score running away by four lengths from favourite Almodovar ($2.60) and Gotta Take Care ($41).

Brad Peterson trained Maythehorsebemagic in New Zealand where he won six races and was a luckless sixth at Ellerslie before crossing the Tasman.

He also won one of his three jumps starts but Feroce said there were no plans to jump him in Australia.

"He was quite impressive today," Feroce said.

"He's a big striding horse who needs plenty of room and the Warrnambool Cup is a definite option for him."

The Warrnambool Cup (2350m) is on May 3 and Feroce says it will be an ideal lead up to the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington on May 19.

Moroney won the 2007 Warrnambool Cup with Sarrera who went on the following year to claim Group One wins in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick and the Doomben Cup.

Maythehorsebemagic was ridden by the in-form Dwayne Dunn who will be aiming for Group One glory on Saturday aboard boom colt All Too Hard in the ATC Sires' Produce Stakes at Randwick.

Unbeaten after three starts, the half brother to champion Black Caviar was the pre-post favourite for the Golden Slipper but trainer John Hawkes and owner Nathan Tinkler opted to save him for the Sires' a week later.
