Mick Price expects brilliant unbeaten three-year-old Marconi to continue on his winning way in Saturday's Fiesta Star Handicap at Flemington but says his real test will come when he gets to 1200 metres next preparation.

The Lago Delight gelding is the shortest-priced favourite of the meeting at $1.65 with TAB Sportsbet in the 1000m straight dash against five rivals.

Marconi has run fast times in his two wins when scoring by six lengths at Stony Creek on November 6 and by 5-1/2 lengths at Caulfield on December 5.

"I think he's a Group horse but he's got to do the job doesn't he," Price said.

"Every time I've galloped him in company he's always beaten them and in every trial he's had he's been five lengths in front after 100 metres.

"He's never been near a horse.

"I think at 1200 metres he'll eventually come back and next preparation when we do ask him to come back it'll be interesting because he's never had to before and I don't want him to be a `tear-arse' leader."

Marconi is one of five mounts at the meeting for Price's apprentice Jason Maskiell who has impressed since arriving from Tasmania earlier this year.

Maskiell, who still claims three kilograms in town, is Victoria's leading apprentice so far this season with 17 wins, placing him fifth on the jockeys' premiership headed by Luke Nolen (22).

He also rides Luminous Harmony for Price in the Shaftesbury Avenue Hcp (1400m), Saddler's Story in the Comic Court Hcp (2500m) for Robert Smerdon, Silky Smooth in the Skipton Hcp (1600m) for David Hayes and Happy Glen in the Red Tempo Sprint (1000m) for Robbie Griffiths.

It has been just over a year since Silky Smooth's last win when he scored by 5-1/2 lengths on a heavy track at Flemington while Happy Glen is out for back-to-back wins in the Red Tempo.

The honest sprinter made it four straight wins in the event last year and has since won over 1100m at Caulfield in April but has had a slight setback leading up to Saturday's race.

Griffiths explained that the Happy Giggle five-year-old cut a leg when running sixth to Custodian over 1000m at Sandown on November 21 and had missed a bit of work.

He subsequently had to be scratched from an 1100m sprint won by Saturday's rival Johnny Fiasco at Caulfield on December 5.

"Leading up to Caulfield, when he had to come off the medication due to the drug rules, the leg blew up," Griffiths said.

"At the last minute it was inflamed so we had to scratch him. He's had some more anti-inflammatories and treatment since then and it appears to be in order now and he seems to be well.

"He has missed a bit of work but he did gallop well on Tuesday morning on the grass (at Cranbourne) and being only a 1000-metre race it won't affect him too much."

Griffiths has been in top form this month with 11 wins including five in town.
