Manawanui is the shortest-priced favourite on a star-studded Warwick Stakes day program and top jockey Glyn Schofield can't wait to get a guide on the three-year-old's spring prospects.

The Ron Leemon-trained Manawanui is $2 favourite to return on a winning note in Saturday's Group Three Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Warwick Farm.

"He's never been to this level before but his form is pretty strong and hopefully he can return and go on with it this campaign," Schofield said.

"Certainly all the indications are that he is going the right way.

"A heavy track first-up over 1300 metres is a bit of a test but he's had two trials."

Manawanui stamped himself as a spring prospect with two wins from three starts in his two-year-old season, including a victory over subsequent Group Two winner Free Wheeling at his most recent outing at Canterbury on May 7.

Schofield has ridden Manawanui in all his trials and two of his three starts but missed the May 7 race through injury following a Sydney Cup fall in April.

"I've thought a lot of him from the first time I rode him," Schofield said.

"He's shown that he's definitely one of the leading young horses coming into the spring and now we've got to see if he can take that step from young horse to three-year-old which is very important.

"I see no reason to think he won't, he gives you a great feel from the saddle, he does everything right and I'm very happy to be riding him. I can't wait."

This year's Up And Coming Stakes will feature fillies for the first time after changes to the spring program.

The Up And Coming Stakes, formerly for colts and geldings, is now a Quality handicap open to all three-year-olds.

Detours, a filly trained by Peter Snowden, is second favourite with Snowden after his third straight win in the race after preparing Rarefied and Blackball in the past two years.

Detours won impressively against older horses in midweek company at Canterbury last Wednesday week, while Manawanui geared up for his return with a 10-length trial win at Rosehill on Monday.

"What I took out of that trial was that it was a trial full of stayers, but he was a young horse trialling against older horses and to trial as well as he did was obviously a positive sign," Schofield said.

"He wasn't in any way asked to do a lot by me either, I didn't shake him up or anything, so I'm sure he's returned in good order."

Leemon expects Manawanui to improve on whatever he produces in the Up And Coming.

""What he does on Saturday will be nowhere near his top," he said.

"I won't have him wound up properly for another two starts."
