So You Think remains the dominant favourite for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup but Maluckyday was the buzz horse at the Call of the Card in Melbourne where he was backed to win more than $1 million.

Maluckyday blasted into the Melbourne Cup field with his impressive Lexus Stakes win on Saturday and one punter believes he can emulate Shocking's 2009 run to Cup glory by backing the four-year-old to win $800,000.

The Zabeel gelding firmed from $10 to $9 and is second pick behind the $3.40 favourite So You Think who attracted one bet of $60,000 and many smaller cash bets from rank-and-file punters.

Betstar's Allan Eskander likes So You Think and predicted he would start shorter than the $3.40 on offer on Monday.

"The favourite was well backed, the $3.40 was a sensational price and I don't reckon you'll get anywhere near it on race day," he said.

"Maluckyday was pretty well backed. We took a single bet to lose half a million dollars on it and there were other dribs and drabs.

"It would have been backed to win more than a million dollars.

Elsewhere, bookmakers have So You Think as short as $3 to give trainer Bart Cummings his 13th Melbourne Cup, but bookmaker Tom Waterhouse says the dual Cox Plate winner can be beaten.

"I think So You Think is going to get beat," he said.

"I'm pulling on its tail big time and I think Maluckyday will win.

"Everyone has chimed into So You Think because it's such a people's horse."

Waterhouse said So You think's impressive Mackinnon Stakes victory on Saturday eased punters' doubts that he could get the 3200-metre Cup trip.

"They keep coming for it but I'm still going to lay it," he said.

"It's the best horse I've ever seen, but I've only been coming to the races for 10 years.

"It's the best horse by a mile but that doesn't mean I don't lay it."

Last year's winner and former favourite Shocking is out to $10, Caulfield Cup winner Descarado at $13 with Americain the best of the record nine internationals in the 24-horse field at $14.

Eskander said the Call of the Card was lively because there were a lot of cash bets.

"Traditionally a lot of the bets come through account holders and professional punters but I thought there were a lot $500 bets, $1000 bets and $5000 bets," he said.

"Illustrious Blue was well backed at $81 into $71 and Zavite was backed from $151 to $101.

"Precedence had its takers at $21 as well too," Eskander said of the Cummings-trained second stringer.

Meanwhile, TAB Sportsbet took a big bet on AJC Australian Oaks winner Once Were Wild of $45,000 at $35 to win more than $1.5 million.
