Lyncean Academy is a favourite in the Guy Walter stable and the trainer would like nothing more than to see him claim an overdue stakes win in the Tattersalls Club Cup.

The six-year-old comes into the New Year's Day feature off a close fifth in the Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last Saturday week won by Palacio De Cristal.

The extra 400 metres of the Listed Tatts Cup should pose few problems for Lyncean Academy who ran third in the McKell Cup (2400m) in May.

"This is a race well within his capabilities," Walter said.

"He has a few things in his favour. He has drawn the inside barrier, he has Chris Munce aboard and he knows him well, and his runs have been very good coming into this.

"He's never far away and I'm expecting him to run well but I would prefer a good track."

Prior to the Villiers, Lyncean Academy was back in the field in a roughhouse Festival Stakes won by frontrunner Rabbuka who missed the interference behind him.

Rabbuka finished fourth in the Villiers after leading early and Walter hopes his presence along with that of Zavite in the Tatts Cup will help Lyncean Academy's case.

"You'd think Zavite and Rabbuka will go forward," Walter said.

"A solid tempo will certainly help Lyncean Academy."

The pace was in Lyncean Academy's favour at his start before the Festival when he came from last to win over 1400 metres.

The Tatts Cup will be his last start this preparation but just how long he is off the scene will depend on how he performs on Friday.

"If he was to win he could just have an ease-up before getting ready for the autumn," Walter said.

"We'll just wait and see what happens."

"He's a lovely, big strong horse and it would be nice to see him win."

Rainbow Styling was the $2.90 favourite in TAB Sportsbet's first markets with Lyncean Academy on the fourth line of betting at $6.50.

In between were Victorian visitor Fairygem and Rabbuka, both at $4.80.

Among Walter's other runners at Randwick are the promising Topi and Super Choice, a half-brother to last season's champion filly Samantha Miss.

"Super Choice showed a lot of promise early and won three in a row but he broke down and had a long time off," Walter said.

"Topi won his maiden last start and did it in style.

"It's a big step up to this class from Gosford but I think he is a horse with a future."

Topi runs in the At Sea Handicap (1600m) while Super Choice is in the RoyalRandwick.com Handicap (1400m).
