High-class sprinter Lucky Secret has smashed a 14-year-old course record at Caulfield, fuelling speculation he could become an international sprinter later this year.

The Rubiton gelding left the gates flying on Saturday in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes and with Nash Rawiller merely shaking the reins at the six-year-old he became the first horse to break 56 seconds for 1000 metres at the track.

Moss Rocket set the record of 56.10s when he won the Chirnside Stakes at Caulfield in the 1995 spring but Lucky Secret stunned trainer Tony Vasil and Rawiller with his winning time of 55.97s.

"I thought he would win but I didn't think he would run that time," Vasil said.

Rawiller said Lucky Secret flew the gates from barrier eight in the nine-horse field and the race was never in doubt.

"He's always been an exceptional 1000-metre horse but I was surprised how easily he got across today," Rawiller said.

"When I let him down I knew they weren't going to beat him.

"It's a pleasure to ride a horse like him."

Lucky Secret was never headed and scored by 2-1/4 lengths from Apache Cat who stormed home from near last to finish second a length ahead of three-year-old Wanted.

Last start Lucky Secret was beaten less than three lengths when ninth in the Group One Manikato Stakes but Vasil was expecting to him to rebound on Saturday after a stunning track gallop at Caulfield last Tuesday.

"He ran his first 600 metres in the Manikato in 33.5 seconds," Vasil said, dismissing the defeat.

"Speed kills.

"I rode him myself on Tuesday on the course proper and I said to a couple of people close to me that it was the best he's worked in his life.

"He's a horse who if he had remained sound could have been absolutely anything."

Leg issues and a bleeding attack have hindered Lucky Secret's career which now stands at 13 wins from 21 starts.

Vasil and Rawiller have enjoyed a lot of success together over the years although not as often nowadays with Rawiller based in Sydney.

Most notably they combined with 2004 Caulfield Cup winner Elvstroem who also won the 2005 Dubai Duty Free.

Lucky Secret may also reunite trainer and jockey overseas in the Hong Kong Sprint in December and a crack at the best sprinters on turf in Dubai next March.

"They are options for sure," Vasil said.

"He's got quite a few issues but if we manage him right you can see what he can do."
