Trainer Tony Gollan could raise the bar to the Brisbane winter carnival with Falvelina if the talented mare returns to winning form at Eagle Farm.

Gollan believes Falvelina is well placed with a three-kilogram claim for apprentice Skye Bogenhuber in Wednesday's Nathan Lawyers Handicap (1000m).

Although Falvelina is eligible for class four, Gollan ran her in open company when she resumed with a struggling 13th to Paprika in the Bat Out Of Hell (900m) at the Gold Coast on January 1.

"I shouldn't have run her in the Bat Out Of Hell," Gollan said.

"The meeting started off on a slow track and wouldn't have been dead by the time her race came around.

"But they got a few showers and the track was downgraded to heavy."

It was the first time Falvelina had started on a heavy track and could possibly be the last.

"We thought about scratching her and putting her in a barrier trial the following week but we went ahead and ran her," Gollan said .

"We never thought we'd beat the favourite Burdekin Blues (fifth) on a good track but she would have been in the mix and I was confident she'd run in the first four on a dry track."

Falvelina has started 16 times in her career for four wins and as many placings.

Her last win was in a 1010-metre class six plate at Doomben in August last year.

Gollan feels Falvelina is best suited to distances up to 1100 metres and will aim her for the Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm in June if she acquits herself well.

"I've tried her a few times in races over 1200 metres and she doesn't quite see it out," Gollan said.

"She's a better filly with racing under her belt and she's had a barrier trial which she won at Toowoomba since the Bat Out Of Hell.

"She's got a good record over 1000 metres and with Skye's claim she comes into the race well and she'll be very hard to beat."

Falvelina has had seven attempts over the 1000-metre journey for three wins and is a winner at the track.

The daughter of Falvelon proved her ability as a three-year-old last season when she downed Cariad at her fourth start back from a spell in a 1000-metre Open at Eagle Farm 12 months ago.

She then finished second to subsequent Epsom Handicap winner Captain Sonador over 1110 metres at Doomben in February last year.

Cariad has since gone on to win in Listed company at Doomben last Saturday with trainer Steele Ryan declaring the mare the best horse he has trained.
