Regally-bred colt Lighthorseman will be aimed towards next month's Group Two Royal Sovereign Stakes provided he comes through a barrier trial at Rosehill on Friday unscathed.

The Redoute's Choice three-year-old out of Salty Sal, who cost $900,000 as a yearling, is the most expensive horse Gary Portelli has trained and will have a 900 metre hitout.

There was plenty of hype surrounding Lighthorseman's debut at Rosehill on August 2 when he started the $2.10 favourite in a 1200 metre race.

He rocketed out of the gates but faded badly to run fifth to Desuetude, a subsequent stakes winner.

But soon after his debut, Lighthorseman was found to have pulled a muscle in his hindquarters and he was sidelined.

"He's come back to where we had him before the injury and he looks in great shape," Portelli said.

The Warwick Farm horseman said the plan was to send Lighthorseman around in a 1000 metre maiden at Hawkesbury on January 22 before heading to Randwick on February 14 for the Royal Sovereign (1200m).

"We want to try and give him an easy kill to get his confidence up and ours too," Portelli said.

Group placed stablemate Over The Wicket will also run at Friday's trials.

The three-year-old has not raced since running 11th in the Golden Slipper.

"He came in for the spring and I gave him a couple of trials but I wasn't happy with him so we put him out," Portelli said.

"But he's come back enormous and we'll aim at races like the Randwick Guineas and Rosehill Guineas and he'll probably start off in the Royal Sovereign as well."

Portelli also has big plans for $500,000 yearling purchase Romanus who will be on show in a 900 metre trial for two-year-olds.

"He's probably going to be set for a spring campaign in Victoria and is a possible Derby horse," Portelli said.

"We might give him one run this preparation then put him out and bring him back for the spring, it just depends on what he does on Friday."
