Mick Price says he is a little bit nervous about Light Fantastic maintaining his unbeaten first-up record after the grey drew barrier one for Friday night's Group Two Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The conqueror of Australia's champion racehorse Weekend Hussler in the in the JJ Liston Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last spring is $2.60 favourite in TAB Sportsbet's fixed odds market.

"It is the squeeze box, the traffic box, and I'm a bit nervous about barrier one but that's Craig's (jockey Craig Newitt) job to have his wits about him," Price said from New Zealand where he was inspecting yearlings.

"The horse is going super and going well enough to run in the first three, if not win.

"But the horse just needs to have the breaks at the right time. For a long-striding horse like him barrier one is not a favourable gate."

Light Fantastic, who has won both times when resuming, scored at his first five starts including his Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) success at Flemington last March and won at the Valley at his only appearance there in the Listed Nissan Stakes (1200m) last February.

But after his Liston victory in August the Danehill Dancer four-year-old's form tapered off in two subsequent runs before being spelled.

The gelding was diagnosed with stomach ulcers which were successfully treated and Price was very happy with his four-length win in an 800m trial on the course proper at Caulfield last Tuesday week.

Meanwhile, big-race jockey Steven King has a belated first race ride on Cox Plate winner El Segundo in the Carlyon.

King said he was to ride El Segundo during the spring of 2007 but he broke his leg in a barrier mishap before a race at Seymour which sidelined him for several months.

"It's great to have the opportunity to ride him because he's a great horse," he said.

King said trainer Colin Little had told him the Pins seven-year-old was going really well, albeit 20kg over his ideal racing weight of 520kg.

"Obviously there is room for improvement but being a small field and being such a good horse and his love of the Valley he'll run really good," King said.

"With the small field the worst-case scenario is he's going to be three lengths off them and the good horse that he is - even though he's underdone - he could still pick them up."

El Segundo hasn't raced since his Cox Plate (2040m) victory over Wonderful World, Haradasun and Miss Finland at the Valley 15 months ago.

The four-time Group One winner underwent stem cell therapy after suffering a tendon injury only days before he was due to resume in last year's Carlyon Stakes (1200m), a race he won in 2007.

The gelding had a barrier trial over 990m at Cranbourne on January 5 and Little took him across from his Caulfield stables to the Valley for a gallop with stablemate Rubijon on Monday.

El Segundo, who has been out of a place just once in five first-up appearances for one win, drew barrier six in the seven-horse field and is an $11 chance.

Lucky Secret is second pick in the betting at $3, with Mind Your Head at $4.20 and three-year-old Von Costa De Hero at $12.
