Four-year-old Cool Customer, who was the work pony for Luca Cumani-trained Cup horses in the spring, has won his maiden at Wangaratta.

The Nuclear Freeze gelding was a $1000 weanling at a 2006 Melbourne sale and despite being unraced was sent to Sandown to accompany English stayers Cima De Triomphe and Basaltico during their stay.

He joined the Peter Moody stable at the end of the carnival.

Cima De Triomphe was unplaced in both the Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon Stakes while Basaltico remained in Australia with Lee Freedman after finishing midfield in the Geelong Cup and with the tailenders in the Melbourne Cup.

"He (Cool Customer) was the favourite horse in the Cumani stable," said Moody's racing manager Jeff O'Connor.

"They fell in love with him and they still have an interest in him."

Cool Customer's owners include Terry Henderson and Simon O'Donnell's OTI Racing, the Cool Leg Syndicate managed by Sara Cumani, and Moody.

He finished fifth at his Cranbourne debut on December 20 but on Monday, racing in blinkers for the first time and ridden by Linda Meech, he romped home untouched by 3-1/4 lengths in the Larneuk Stud Maiden Plate (1600m).

"His run at Cranbourne was okay but we were hoping that the blinkers would make a difference," O'Connor said.

O'Connor said the win was as welcome as it was rare for horses of Cool Customer's background.

"Normally lead ponies for Cup horses end up running in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes or the Sandown Classic but this bloke has had to go to Wangaratta to win his maiden, he said."

The stable is hoping to continue a winning run with OTI racing on Wednesday when former French mare Belle Famille lines up in the Visit Handicap (2100m) at Sandown.

The six-year-old has won once in 20 starts but was stakes placed over 2400 metres in France.

She has been placed at four of her fives runs with Moody and should again be competitive after finishing third to Testalux at Moonee Valley on December 18.
