Jockey Nathan Dunn will be looking to redeem himself on Last Shogun in Warrnambool's Brierly Steeplechase after two rides which have disappointed trainer Terry O'Sullivan.

Last Shogun has had a frustrating start to his jumps campaign with O'Sullivan blaming jockey error at two of his three steeplechase starts, while the eight-year-old clipped a jump and fell in another steeplechase at Hamilton.

"He has had a mixed start to the season but I really believe the horse is going well," said O'Sullivan who co-trains the gelding with his daughter Karina.

On Tuesday Last Shogun will be out to improve on his 2010 third in the Brierly Steeplechase (3450m) with a view to backing up in Thursday's Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m).

Last Shogun won't be a popular pick with punters in the Brierly but O'Sullivan said the horse was going better than his form suggests.

Last Shogun finished third of four runners at first steeplechase start this campaign at Sandown but O'Sullivan was critical of Dunn for failing to use more initiative in a slowly run race.

"They cantered up the straight (the first time) and it didn't suit him when it turned in to sprint home," O'Sullivan said.

Last start O'Sullivan was even more upset with Dunn's tactics to attack the Oakbank hill twice on Last Shogun in the Von Doussa Steeplechase (3250m) on April 25.

He was unable to sustain the effort on the pace and was a tiring eighth to Brierly rival Vindicating.

"I was most unhappy with Nathan's ride at Oakbank," O'Sullivan said.

"He went hard up the hill twice and I told him afterwards going hard once up the hill gets you beaten.

"I have put him (Dunn) back on the horse tomorrow but he really has to redeem himself."

O'Sullivan said the Hamilton run was an inexplicable blip in Last Shogun's lead up but he was encouraged by how well he jumped, even when tired, at Oakbank.

He said he should get every chance in the Brierly given the likelihood of a genuine speed against jumpers such as Tarawera and Royal Laddie.

"I think he will run really well," O'Sullivan said.

Last Shogun has been aimed primarily at the Grand Annual this campaign after O'Sullivan scratched him from last year's feature because he wasn't seasoned enough.

"He was a first season jumper and I didn't think he was mature enough to back up after the Brierly, but I think he is worth a crack at it this year," O'Sullivan said.
