Mazzacano may follow the path of the great Crisp and run in the Grand National at England's famous Aintree course.

The eight-year-old jumper made a triumphant return to the track after a two year absence when he won Saturday's Australian Steeple at Sandown.

Trainer Robbie Laing said Mazzacano would be suited by the marathon journey (7200m) of the Grand National, a race in which Crisp was runner-up to Red Rum in 1973.

Laing also said the likely wet track conditions would suit.

"The distance would be perfect for him as he's tough and he's as sound as he's been for a long while," Laing said.

Crisp, who won the Hiskens Steeple at Moonee Valley carrying 70kg in 1969 and 76kg 1970, gave away a huge advantage to Red Rum and led the race by a big margin before being run down late.

Red Rum who went on to win the race three times.

Laing said Mazzacano would run in the Crisp Steeple (3900m) at Sandown on August 16.

A decision would then be made on whether he tackles the $200,000 Grand National Steeple (4530m) at Sandown on August 30.

Laing admitted before Saturday's race he was worried about the 69.5kg Mazzacano had to carry.

Big weights may also force him to race the gelding overseas.

"He wouldn't want to be getting much more weight," Laing said.

Laing rated Mazzacano's comeback win as one of the greatest achievements of his training career.

Mazzacano was brought back to fitness painstakingly by Laing who said it was as big a thrill as Sir Pentire's first-up win in the Warrnambool Grand Annual, Pantani's first up win in the 2005 Andrew Ramsden Stakes and Roman Arch's 2006 Australian Cup.

"They were all huge thrills and great individual performances. It's great when it comes off," he said.

Laing has brought Mazzacano back from three bowed tendons and has managed to keep him undefeated in seven jumps starts.

It was the gelding's second Australian Steeple victory and he hadn't raced since winning the Crisp Steeple at Sandown in June 2007 when he returned to scale with a bowed tendon.

Ridden by his regular partner Gavin Bedggood, Mazzacano ($4.20 equal fav) settled second last but made ground quickly to hit the front on the turn.

He held out Brookton Mist ($16) to score by three-quarters of a length with War Dancer ($8) 2-3/4 lengths away third.
