Trainer Mark Kavanagh intends to back promising colt Shocking up at Caulfield on Saturday, seven days after he landed his first metropolitan win.

The colt is raced Lawrence Eales who also owns stablemate, Caulfield Guineas winner Whobegotyou.

By Street Cry, the sire of Whobegotyou, Shocking has taken a bit longer to hit form but with good reason.

"He has taken a bit of time but we couldn't get him going any earlier because actually he's allergic to dust and sawdust," Kavanagh said.

Since the trainer changed the bedding at his stables, it has made a big difference to Shocking.

"Before that his nose was wet all the time and if we took him off any of the powders for it he would pick it up.

"But now that we have him right he's on his way."

The colt has raced six times for two wins and has finished out of the placings just once at his debut over 1000 metres at Ballarat in May last year.

After finishing a length second to subsequent Flemington winner Testaguy when he resumed in a 1200m Ballarat three-year-old maiden on March 26, the colt won a 1300m maiden at Bendigo on April 17 before finishing a head-second to Awimoweh over 1600m at Caulfield on May 2.

On Saturday, Shocking beat another promising three-year-old in Lakonian by a half-neck in the K A Morrison Hcp (1600m) with the runner-up five lengths clear of the third placed Tindal.

"If Laconian hadn't been in the race he would probably have won by the same distance," Kavanagh said.

"He's learning to get his act together and grind and win. He rolled around a bit and there is a lot of improvement in him.

"We were put back a bit by his problems but in saying that it hasn't hurt him one bit."

Shocking will step beyond 1600 metres for the first time in the Hydrogen Hcp (2000m).

"We might back up on Saturday and see where we are from there," Kavanagh said.

"He's got to keep improving to really get up there, but he's got a bit more potential than most."

Meanwhile Whobegotyou is spelling on the Mornington Peninsula ahead of a spring campaign.

The break follows a luckless autumn preparation in which he failed to win in five starts but was placed on three occasions, including an unlucky third to Vision And Power in the Doncaster Mile at Randwick.

Kavanagh said Whobegotyou would be entered for all the spring majors.

Cox Plate winner Maldivian will have a scan on Friday week to see how his suspensory ligament injury is progressing which will give Kavanagh a better idea of his spring prospects.

The Zabeel six-year-old hasn't raced since his brilliant first-up win in the C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 8.
