Haunted by last year's Caulfield Cup, Mark Kavanagh won't declare odds-on favourite Whobegotyou over the line in Saturday's Victoria Derby at Flemington.

"I am trying to be a bit careful because the last one I had that they said was over the line, well, he wasn't," Kavanagh said.

Maldivian was the raging favourite for the 2007 Caulfield Cup but was dramatically scratched when he slashed his neck in the barrier.

Kavanagh said something like that makes you think twice, no matter how good a chance you think your horse may be in a big race.

Whobegotyou has won five of his seven starts and is $1.55 with TAB Sportsbet after dominant victories at his last three runs in the Bill Stutt Stakes, Caulfield Guineas and AAMI Vase.

The last horse to the claim that treble was Helenus who was odds-on favourite when he went on to win the 2002 Victoria Derby.

"I am trying to keep everything calm and not get too excited," Kavanagh said.

"He is not an over-the-line job.

"He has never won at Flemington or over the distance and we are well aware that Derbys can often be pretty open and there can be an upset.

"I wouldn't be having my $10 on him at $1.50, but I wouldn't be swapping him for any other runner either."

Jockey Michael Rodd agreed that the unknown was how Whobegotyou would handle the 2500 metres.

"He has been racing fantastic and if it was a 2000-metre race I would be having my house on him," Rodd said.

"Being 2500 metres and at Flemington there are other horses that have the credentials to run the distance out better but I wouldn't be swapping the ride on him."

Rodd nominated Buffett, who ran second in the AAMI Vase, and New Zealander My Scotsgrey, who flashed home from last in last week's Geelong Classic (2224m), as potential threats.

He said riding a horse like Whobegotyou gave him a lot of confidence.

"He is pretty bombproof the way he goes about his business and he's always got a very good finish," Rodd said.

He said last week Whobegotyou stargazed on the home turn at Moonee Valley which he hoped was a sign that the horse still had a lot more to give.

"He is always waiting for me to make a move on him before he knows what to do," Rodd said.

"He had a very good look around in the AAMI Vase so I'm hoping he has got plenty up his sleeve.

"To me he felt like he could have run away from the others a little bit more and I'm hoping that is the reason he might run the distance."

The Mick Price-trained Pre Eminence is the only other horse under double-figure odds, posted at $9 after leading all the way last start in the Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield two weeks ago.

Larry's Never Late finished fourth in the Norman Robinson but has been crying out for ground and is $11 while Buffett is $13 with the next best My Scotsgrey ($18).

The Tiger ($21) led all the way to win the Geelong Classic but Haymaker (1974) was the last of only three winners of that race to go on and take the Derby.

The others were the great Tobin Bronze (1965) and Dayana (1972).
