The first juvenile races of the season in Sydney, the Breeders' Plate (1000m) for colts and geldings and the Gimcrack (1000m) for fillies have traditionally been sound guides to the Golden Slipper.
Saturday's versions are unlikely to be any different with strong nominations for both races, headed by Gerald Ryan-trained filly Champagne Dynamite, the most impressive winner at the official Randwick trials last Monday.
The youngster, managed by the Darby Racing Syndicate which won last year's Gimcrack with Our Joan Of Arc, is one of 17 entries for the fillies division along with stablemate Bella Bellagio and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Actrice.
David Payne, who has enjoyed tremendous success with juveniles in recent seasons and won the 2006 Gimcrack with Hurried Choice, has Cosmo Gal and Circus Rock in line to make their debuts.
Cosmo Gal won her 800m heat at the official two-year-old trials while Circus Rock was runner-up to So Detached.
"Cosmo Gal won a trial the other day. She's not a big filly, only small and she is a half-sister to Cortina Gal with a bit of speed," Payne said.
"Circus Rock is a big filly and she'll be a nice filly later.
"I've nominated them both but I'll just have a look at them and see how they do this week.
"It's difficult with the babies, you don't know who you're taking on. With those trials the other day, some will improve and some won't so you're going in a bit blind."
Payne has Nash Rawiller and Glyn Schofield on standby for the mounts but has yet to decide which jockey will partner which youngster.
Patinack Farm is set to be represented in the Gimcrack by Capital Raising who was also an impressive trial winner at Randwick.
"She is a General Nediym filly and she's a speedy little filly and very professional," said Patinack Farm trainer John Thompson.
There were 18 nominations for the Breeders' Plate including Baltic and Jigsaws for Darley trainer Peter Snowden while Gary Portelli has entered three - Battle Ready, Butt I'm Ready and Come On Charger.
The latter is by 2003 Breeders' Plate winner Charge Forward, who relegated Dance Hero to third before going on to run second to that gelding in the Golden Slipper six months later.
