Jockey Mark Zahra will be sidelined for at least eight weeks after suffering a fractured pelvis in a freak trackwork accident at Flemington.

Zahra's mount was walking towards a starting point for a gallop on Tuesday when he reared and sent the hoop airborne before landing on him.

The jockey's manager Reece Murphy said further tests at Royal Melbourne Hospital would determine if Zahra's injury would require an operation that could extend his time on the sidelines.

"It was a freakish thing, the horse he was riding at Flemington reared up because a horse in front shied and Mark's horse flipped him over and he fell flat on his back and then the horse landed on him," Murphy said.

"Thankfully there were no head injuries or anything like that but it was still a very nasty incident.

"X-rays showed that he has a fractured pelvis and he will be out for at least eight weeks but if he needs an operation it could keep him out a little bit longer.

"He's having more scans and then the orthopaedic surgeon will assess the situation and go from there but he will remain in hospital for at least three days and then hopefully get to go home."

Zahra, who booted the Peter Snowden-trained juvenile Rarefied to victory at Caulfield on Saturday, celebrated two Group One victories last year with Eskimo Queen in the Coolmore Classic and Rockdale in the TJ Smith Classic.
