Black Caviar lived up to all expectations at Randwick on Saturday but for New Zealand's star Jimmy Choux, Derby day brought disappointment.
Trainer John Bary offered no excuses after Jimmy Choux's sixth behind Shamrocker in the AJC Australian Derby but said he would bring the horse back to Australia in the spring.
Bary has said more than once he believes Jimmy Choux is a sprinter miler rather than a stayer but he opted for the Derby in preference to taking on the older horses in the Doncaster.
Jimmy Choux was the Derby favourite but at the end of the day he could not emulate champion Bonecrusher's 1986 feat of completing the New Zealand-Australian Derby double.
But Bary will be back, planning an assault on the Melbourne spring including the Cox Plate (2040m).
"We underestimated what the New Zealand Derby and the Rosehill Guineas took out of him," Bary told NZPA.
"He's been up for six months or more and he has just came to the end of his preparation.
"They have to eventually run out of gas. He has done a great job and he still won three Group ones, so you have to be happy with that.
"We have to decide what's best for him but your immediate thoughts are a tilt at the Cox Plate.
"I think that would be the perfect race for him, 2000-metres sit and sprint. He's not really a stayer."
While Jimmy Choux will be resting at home during the autumn and winter, Bary plans to cross the Tasman with The Hombre and revisit Queensland.
The winner of the Group Three Rough Habit Plate last year, The Hombre then finished second in the Grand Prix Stakes before his ninth in the Queensland Derby won by Dariana.
"We will look at Queensland again with The Hombre," Bary said.
"There are some nice races there for him."
