Two of Australia's most admired sprinters have won the Group One TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick in the past two years and if Hot Danish can break through on Saturday it would certainly be another popular victory.

Hot Danish is one of Sydney's favourite racehorses but a Group One victory has proved elusive from six previous attempts.

She has been installed the $2.90 favourite for the 1200m feature.

Takeover Target thrilled the public with his explosive 2-3/4 length win 12 months ago while two years back the Greg Eurell-trained Apache Cat raced to victory by the same margin.

Hot Danish will never reach the heights of those multiple Group One winners but her nine stakes victories and two Group One placings have endeared her to the public.

She has started favourite in 15 of her 22 career starts, including in four Group Ones.

The mare received a rousing reception when she returned to scale after her first-up victory in the Group Two Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on March 20 and regular jockey Tim Clark is hopeful Saturday is the day Hot Danish can break her Group One duck.

"I think it was a bit of a relief for (trainer) Les (Bridge) to see her come back like she did first-up after her preparation in Melbourne in the spring," Clark said.

"She seems to have come back as good as ever and I'm looking forward to Saturday and hopefully getting that Group One."

Hot Danish's only previous attempt in Group One weight-for-age company was in last year's All-Aged Stakes (1400m) where she finished fourth to Danleigh, beaten less than a length.

That was on a slow track and if there's any concern leading in to Saturday it is the prospect of another rain-affected surface.

"A good to dead track would be my preferred surface with her, that will give her every possible chance," Clark said.

"She obviously performs well in the wet because she tries so hard but it's definitely not her favoured surface. Hopefully it dries out."

Hot Danish has won four from six second-up and Clark believes the decision to keep her to shorter distances this preparation suits the mare.

Clark even said he was a little surprised how quickly Hot Danish sprinted to the front last start when holding on to defeat Stradbroke winner Black Piranha by half a length.

"She probably got a little bit tired late but I think 1200 metres around Randwick will be perfect for her and I'm going into the race with plenty of confidence this week," Clark said.
