Melito may get her chance to turn the tables on All-Aged Stakes winner Hot Danish in next month's Group One Doomben 10,000, but a bigger prize awaits the Sydney filly in the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap in June.
Trainer Gerald Ryan has sent Melito north for Brisbane's two feature Group One sprints, the Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 29 and the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 12.
The Group One BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 15 and the Group One Winter Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 26 could bookend her winter program.
Ryan was full of praise for Melito's effort to finish second to Hot Danish in the Group One All-Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick last Saturday.
"It was no disgrace to run second to Hot Danish," Ryan said.
"She's (Melito) been an honest and consistent filly right through her career.
"If you take the (VRC) Oaks and the Golden Slipper out of her form, she hasn't finished worse than fourth."
Ryan abandoned plans to try Melito as a stayer after sending her to Melbourne for the Group One VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington last November when she finished a distant last to Faint Perfume.
A heavy track ruined her chances in last year's Group One Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill where she finished eighth to Phelan Ready.
"We've worked her out and have decided to keep her back in shorter races," Ryan said.
"She proved behind Hot Danish on Saturday that her win in the (Group One) TJ Smith was no fluke.
"She's shown she can be very adaptable by racing off the pace in the All-Aged but Hot Danish was too hard to run down."
Trainer Les Bridge nominated Hot Danish for the Doomben 10,000 on Tuesday but not the Stradbroke Handicap.
Bridge rates the Doomben 10,000 a perfect race for Hot Danish, who is likely to have a barrier trial in Sydney after a short break before heading north.
Ryan is yet to decide if Melito will run in the BTC Cup, but has already engaged Blake Shinn to partner her in her Brisbane campaign.
He believes Melito is in the right form to continue the great record three-year-olds have in the Stradbroke.
"It's always been a good race for three-year-old fillies," Ryan said.
"Melito will be rising four and she looks like a gelding.
"Ortensia ran well when placed in last year's Stradbroke and Private Steer, La Montagna and Dane Ripper have all won it as three-year-olds."
The Bart Cummings-trained Dane Ripper won the Stradbroke as a three-year-old in 1997 and was later joined by Private Steer in 2003 while La Montagna was successful in 2006.
Ortensia has arrived in Brisbane for the winter and will be ridden by Hugh Bowman in the BTC Cup and Doomben 10,000, with regular rider Craig Williams in Japan.
