Hissing Sid earned a Brisbane Cup start when he revelled in the heavy conditions to win his second Warrnambool Cup.

Prepared by Warrnambool dentist Bill Wilde and his son Symon, Hissing Sid hadn't won since last year's Listed Warrnambool Cup when ridden by Wayne Hokai but had suffered from jarring up badly on hard tracks last spring.

He was ridden by Ben Melham in Thursday's $130,000 2350m event and he followed the plan devised by Symon Wilde, to cut the corner, to the letter to comfortably beat outsider Cruyfforme with topweight Light Vision third.

The Wildes admitted they were having an ordinary carnival this year, not having a winner on the board in 25 races leading up to the Cup over the three days.

"Not everything has gone right for us this week, we've had some bad luck with barriers and that sort of thing but to win your home town Cup makes up for everything," Symon Wilde said.

He said a start in the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 12 was nearly a certainty now.

"He really has to. He's a better horse on wet ground, I'm convinced of that," he said.

"He can get away with a couple of runs in a preparation on firm tracks that's why he went so well in the Blamey (fourth) and in the Easter Cup (third) but he jarred up when third at Flemington last start as he did last spring.

"He's a good horse and it was a good ride by Ben Melham."

A five-year-old gelding by Golden Snake out of the At Talaq mare Domitrix, Hissing Sid has won seven races and been placed seven times from 24 starts for stakes earnings of $438,790.

Robert Smerdon dominated the carnival with seven wins, including a double on Thursday.

He was the first trainer in 12 years to collect the trainers' bonus of a Mercedes-Benz 4WD worth $90,000, while Mark Zahra was leading jockey with five wins, four of them for Smerdon.

Sandown Lodge Pty Ltd Syndicate picked up a $50,000 bonus when its Stravinsky filly, the Smerdon-trained Enzed Girl, won the Inglis Bonus 1200 two-year-old event with Michelle Payne in the saddle.
