Angry trainer Gerald Ryan says weight has forced Hinchinbrook out of Saturday's Run To The Rose with the colt asked to carry 59.5kg.

Ryan will instead run Hinchinbrook against older horses in the Starlight Stakes (1100m) at the Rosehill meeting.

As its name suggests, the Group Three Run To The Rose (1300m) is the lead-up to the $1 million Golden Rose two weeks later, the first Group One race of the season.

"There's no way he'll run with 59-1/2 kilograms," Ryan said.

"It's a fair dinkum joke.

"I might as well take him straight to Melbourne and that would be another horse lost to Sydney racing."

Hinchinbrook was the only three-year-old among the 18 nominations to have raced in the Golden Slipper in which he finished fourth before running third in the AJC Sires' Produce Stakes.

Racing NSW liaison officer for racing and handicapping, Kerry Jordan, said the weight had been assessed after comparisons with the topweights of the past two years since the race's inception.

"Denman had 58 kilograms last year with one metropolitan win," Jordan said.

"The previous year Baci Amore had 58.5kg for a win and a second in the Group One TJ Smith.

"Hinchinbrook has had five starts for wins in the Canonbury Stakes and the Group Three Skyline, thirds in the Pago Pago and the Group One Sires' Produce and fourth in the Slipper."

The David Payne-trained Masquerader was one of the Slipper fancies but missed the race when he pulled up sore from trackwork in the week leading up to the big race.

He has 58kg in the Run To The Rose while Champagne Stakes runner-up, the Tim Martin-trained Sasa, has 56kg.

Fernhill Handicap winner Kudakulari from the Bart Cummings stable will carry 55.5kg with the rest of the field on the 53kg limit.

Fitness-wise Ryan has no concerns about Hinchinbrook ahead of his season pipe-opener.

"He worked half a mile on the course proper at Rosehill this morning with Blake Shinn aboard and I was very happy with him."

Hinchinbrook is likely to have just two starts in Sydney this spring, heading to Melbourne to be prepared for the Caulfield Guineas after he runs in the Golden Rose.

He has won both his recent barrier trials on rain-affected surfaces.

Gai Waterhouse will be looking to make her mark on the early spring features with unbeaten colt Squamosa among the nominations.

Both Squamosa's starts have been on heavy tracks and he has been dominant, winning by three lengths on each occasion.

There were 12 entries for the Starlight Stakes including the Peter Moody-trained Avenue who was also nominated for Caulfield and Morphettville.
